About the Institute

The Road and Bridge Research Institute is the leading scientific and research institution in Poland dealing with transport infrastructure. The Institute’s activities are focused on the development of science and the practical application of research results. The scientific research and development works conducted concern the construction and maintenance of transport facilities, in particular roads and road bridge structures, railway engineering structures, and underground structures. The Institute’s research activity covers material, technological, economic and environmental issues.

Profile of Activities and Competences of the Institute

Scope of Activities

Main areas of activity:

  • design, construction and maintenance of road infrastructure,

  • testing of materials and products used in transport construction,

  • assessment of the technical condition of roads and engineering structures,

  • geotechnics,

  • traffic engineering and road safety,

  • road management systems,

  • transport telematics, databases on roads and engineering structures.

IBDiM proposes innovative solutions for the construction, rehabilitation and maintenance of roads and engineering structures. It creates, develops and tests durable, safe and modern materials, technologies, methods and systems. Through its scientific work, implementation activities, expert opinions and consultancy services, the Institute supports investments, modernisation and rehabilitation of roads and bridges, and assists in introducing rational road network management systems. The high qualifications and experience of its scientific and engineering staff, as well as its modern and often unique laboratory facilities, undoubtedly constitute a major asset of the Institute.

The Road and Bridge Research Institute cooperates with national and international organisations and research institutions. The objective of this cooperation is to align Polish road infrastructure with European technological, environmental and social requirements.

IBDiM is a member of the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL), bringing together leading European institutes dealing with road and bridge issues, and of FERSI – the Forum of European Road Safety Research Institutes.

IBDiM experts participate in the work of international associations and hold important positions on the boards of prestigious road organisations.

The Institute demonstrates strong activity in international research projects, resulting in projects carried out under the European Union Framework Programmes, the CORNET initiative, the EUREKA programme, COST actions and other research undertakings, such as FEHRL projects, CEDR projects and the euroregional CONNECT project.

IBDiM actively participates in initiatives of the National Centre for Research and Development, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of Infrastructure and the National Science Centre.

In fulfilling its mission of disseminating scientific and technical knowledge, the Institute has for many years organised conferences, seminars and training courses aimed at transferring the latest knowledge and supporting the professional development of participants.

The world’s first Pontiseum was established on the premises of the Institute – a permanent exhibition entitled “Bridges from the Vistula”. Since 2014, visitors have been able to admire fragments of the structures of Warsaw’s first permanent bridges, recovered from the bed of the Vistula River after more than 70 years in river sediments. Today, beautifully displayed, they are monuments of technical heritage and constitute an important element of national heritage.

The Institute offers cooperation in the creation and implementation of new projects aimed at the development of transport infrastructure, as well as high-quality expert opinions, testing and technical analyses for the sector.

We invite you to cooperate!
